The Great
NBC Smilin' Saturday Mornin' Parade
Progress Memos
Saturday
Special - NBC Progress Memo
Dated:
July 28, 1976
1. Compact
Video can accommodate us on the 27th if we are willing to use the
Jeep as the one camera unit. The new one camera unit may be
available by that time, but it depends on the schedule of the
company that is using it in Berkeley.
2. Bands
have been contacted and three of the good ones have given me
availability.
A) Long
Beach Jr. Concert Band
Director:
Marvin Marker
According
to all source of information this is the best in the area. They
have done Motion Pictures and Commercials. Mr. Marker has produced
this sort of thing before and is willing to coordinate the bands.
They are the most expensive, and I would want to make Mr. Marker’s
gratuity more than the other Directors. I have yet to negotiate
this price.
B) The
Reseda Youth Band
Director:
Leonard Lutz
A younger
band and not as experienced as the others but should do very well.
They want Bus & Lunch & $200.00 & Gratuity for Dir.
C) The
Santa Ana Winds
Director:
Robert Ward
Has worked
a lot and are playing Disneyland on the 28th. They want Bus &
Lunch & $300.00 & Gratuity for Director.
The
lunches may be scheduled around, and the Directors gratuity has
not been mentioned to the respective Directors.
3. Magic
Mountain was surveyed July 28, 1976 by Bob Wynn, Drew Handley,
Draper Lewis and Compact Video.
Large
green area outside front gate will do very well for the assembly
and playing area of the show and the area near the Oasis Cafe on
the west side of the park will look good for the parade through
the crowd. Pick up shots inside the park such as shooting gallery,
cotton candy, etc. with Kids involved can be done in the same
general area.
4.
Margaret Loesch in Bill Hogan’s office was contacted in
reference to getting PR material and cutouts or whatever for the
floats. She had not contacted DePatie Freleng, Walter Lanz, D’Angelo
or Goldwyn yet, she will do so this afternoon and I am to call her
back in the morning (7/29/76) then contact the various offices for
the information or materials.
5. Talked
with Bruce Weintraub about the floats, he has contacted a man in
Pasadena who builds and rents floats. The man has a dog float and
can probably get others. There is a giant mushroom at Krofft, but
it will have to be refurbished and transported from the Factory in
the Valley. Some of the problems of floats and props may be
eliminated if we shoot at Disneyland.
6. All of
the Music that we are to be concerned with, including the band
marching, should be on 1/4" tape for use in the field.
7.
Generally things are falling in, and as soon as a shooting date has
been determined, I will start locking them in.

Special - NBC Progress Memo
Dated:
July 29, 1976
1. Bruce
Weintraub is extremely busy with the C.A.P.E.R. production. So
that there is no undue burden put on him and neither of the
productions suffers for lack of time, I have contacted Bob Keene
for his availability. I have been assured that Bob will have the
time to do the show. I am having Bob Keene call Bob Ames to make a
deal. A meeting is being set up between Bob Wynn, Bob Keene and
myself for Monday morning, 8/2/76.
2. In
vieweing the Saturday Specials from 1974 and 1975, there was a
Pink Panther costume. It may still be in existence. I will check
with dePatie Freleng or try to trace it for our use.
3. There
are four dancing Clowns in the script, in a special that was done
in Nashville there were dancing clowns - I will check with Carl
Jablonski as to where those costumes came from and if they are
available. I have not checked this out with Bob Wynn yet but will
do so.
4. Must
get with Bill Hogan for format layout.
5. Kay is
checking on wardrobe person. Since there are several costumes
involved there may be more time involved than originally thought.
6.
Awaiting word on location, and shooting date and Host.

Special - NBC Progress Memo
Dated:
July 29, 1976
1. Bob
Wynn will use either the new one camera unit or the Jeep,
whichever is available. This frees Sharon at Compact Video to
cover us on any of the days that we have talked about. As soon as
we decide on a shooting date I will tie up the equipment and the
editing facilities.
2. Spoke
to Draper Lewis as to when we would have more on the script and
was told that changes from the original draft would not be
drastic. Am to call him back Tuesday 8/3, he will have further
word then.
3. Spoke
with production companies:
A) DePatie
Freleng: Lee Gunther & David DePatie
Pink
Panther, Texas Toads, The Inspector, Jaws, The Ant and the
Aardvark
Lee has
some posters and may have some other material, he is looking thru
the back room and will get them out. I am to go by tomorrow 7/30
in the PM to look. No costumes, and no live talent here.
Cast: All
Cartoons
B) Walter
Lanz: Robert Miller & Walter Lanz
Woody
Woodpecker
Robert
suggests that I come by when Mr. Lanz is in, next Tuesday 10:00
a.m. 8/3. They have a Woody Woodpecker suit, I will have to get
the size and check the agreement to see if they are to supply the
actor for the suit.
Cast:
Cartoon / Woody Woodpecker
C) D’Angelo:
Michael McLain
McDuff,
Monster Squad, Big John, Little John
(Note in
pencil: Cast appearing at Ram’s Game - 8/28/76)
Michael
has life size cut outs of Dracula, Wolf Man and Frankenstein.
He
is looking for additional material and I can stop by any time to
look.
Compensation
for the cast is to come from D’Angelo, as per contract he is to
deliver people for publicity.
Cast:

D) Goldwyn:
John Kubishon

the Lost

Baloney, talk to Bruce to see if we can come up with more.

with Bruce at the first chance to go over all the floats required,
noticed Circus wagon today.
4. Music: Wally Gold
will be in Los Angeles next week will see that he and Bob Wynn get
together for discussion.
Bill Kapp,
Contractor for musicians, contact him through Wally Gold.
5. Would
like to aim for 29th of August as a shooting date if possible.

In viewing
the closing credits for the NBC Preview shows for 1974 and 1975, I
find no promotional credits. Both of these shows were done in
Studio. I don’t think that any locations were involved.

Saturday
Special - NBC Progress Memo
Dated:
August 2, 1976
1. Talked
with Bob Wynn and Bob Keene this AM we are meeting at 6:00 PM to
lay out the requirements and perhaps schedule.
2. Spoke
to Mr. Robert Ward of the Santa Ana Winds (a band), he informs me
that they are appearing at Disneyland on the 28th of August.
This
is for an ongoing event that Disneyland has everyday, called
America on Parade -- It may be that this is the regular parade, I
am not familiar with it.
The man
that contacted Mr. Ward was Tony Peluso.
There are
two parades this week that we might check into to either contact
people or look to see if there are any floats that might be used
or rented.
A. The
Corn Festival in La Habra, Saturday Aug. 7, 1976
B. Fiesta
in Santa Barbara, Thursday Aug. 5, 1976
The Parade
chairman for the La Habra Corn Festival Parade is Mr. (Fire
Inspector - Fire Station #1) Joe Warren. The parade assembles at
8:30 AM Saturday Aug. 7, 1976 at 1200 W. La Habra Blvd. at Idaho,
which is 1/2 mile East of Beach Blvd.
The Santa
Barbara "Fiesta" parade Chairman is Ray Fraker, the
parade assembles at the foot of State Street at Cabrillo, at the
beach. Since the floats are disassembled right after the parade
and they probably are not road worthy for such a long trip, it may
not be feasible to even go see this one. Also the parade is along
historical lines. They have some float beds also.
3.
According to the first Draft Script we will need:
1) Float
for - Woody Woodpecker, Pink Panther, The Ant and the Aardvark,
Mister Jaws, The Inspector.
2) McDuff
- Invisible Dog
3) Monster
Squard - They have a car.
4) Land of
the Lost - Dinosaurs, rocks, etc.
5) Big
John, Little John - Has two cars, large and small. May need some
kind of lab equipment.
6) Kids
from C.A.P.E.R. - They have a van with a big hot dog in a bun on
the top.
7) YOU - I
haven’t seen this show so have no suggestions.
